The deal, in plain words

The short version
- The app is free to use, at home or at work.
- What you dictate and record is yours. We never receive it.
- If you record other people, getting their permission is up to you.
- Speech recognition and AI-written text make mistakes. Read before you send.
- The app comes as it is, without a warranty.
What these terms cover
These terms cover the mumbly app for Mac (“the app”) and this website. “We” means the people who make the app. By installing or using the app you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use it; removing it is described in the privacy policy.
Using the app
- You may install and use the app on Macs you own or look after, for personal or work use, at no charge.
- You may not sell the app, or pass off a changed copy as ours.
- Don't use it to break the law or to harm other people, for example by recording someone secretly where that isn't allowed.
Recording other people
The app can record the sound of a call or a meeting and write notes from it. The rules about recording conversations differ between countries and states: some need one person's consent, some need everyone's. You are responsible for telling the people you record and getting whatever permission the law requires where you and they are.
It can be wrong
The app turns sound into text and uses an AI model to tidy text, draft replies, translate and summarize meetings. All of these make mistakes: a misheard word, a wrong number, a summary that leaves something out. Read what it wrote before you rely on it or send it. Don't depend on it alone where a mistake would matter, such as medical, legal, financial or safety decisions.
The app pastes text where your cursor is and does not press Return or send a message for you unless you turned on Press Enter and asked for it. What you send is your decision.
Your words are yours
What you dictate, record, write and import stays yours. We run no server that receives it, so we need no licence to it and claim none. How the app handles it is described in the privacy policy.
Other people's services
The app downloads its models from Hugging Face and its updates from GitHub. If you choose to, it can also open a web search in your browser or let an AI app you use read your meetings and notes. Those services belong to other companies and run under their terms and privacy policies, not these. We are not responsible for what they do.
Software and models inside the app
The app is built on other people's work, each piece under its own licence:
- Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3 by NVIDIA, the speech model (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0), run through FluidAudio (Apache 2.0).
- Qwen3-4B by Alibaba's Qwen team, the writing model (Apache 2.0), run through llama.cpp (MIT).
- Whisper large-v3-turbo by OpenAI, the optional model for more languages, run through whisper.cpp (MIT).
- Speaker models from the pyannote and WeSpeaker projects, for telling voices apart.
- Sparkle, for updates.
Nothing in these terms limits the rights those licences give you.
Updates and changes to the app
The app checks for new versions and installs them by itself unless you turn that off in Settings. We may add, change or remove features. The changelog says what each version changed.
Free now, and what may cost money later
Everything the app does on your Mac is free and is meant to stay free. We may offer optional paid extras later, such as sync between your devices. They will have their own price and terms, shown before you pay, and nothing you already use will be moved behind them.
No warranty
The app is provided as it is. We work hard on it, but we don't promise that it will be free of errors, that it will always be available, or that it will suit a particular purpose. Some places give consumers rights that can't be signed away; these terms don't take those away.
Our responsibility to you
The app is free, and you use it at your own risk. As far as the law allows, we are not liable for losses that come from using it or being unable to use it, including lost work, lost data, or the results of a mistake in what it wrote. Keep your own copies of anything that matters.
Stopping
You can stop at any time by removing the app. Nothing needs to be cancelled, because there is no account.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, the date at the top changes and the new version applies from then on. If a change matters, the changelog will mention it.
